Sac Beer Week – More Exciting Than Christmas

A year ago I would have considered anyone crazy for waiting two plus hours in line for a small 8oz taste of beer. Flash-forward to February 23rd, 2013 and there I was on the brisk Saturday afternoon standing in a very long line outside of the Streets of London. The atmosphere was thick with anticipation as the crowd anxiously, albeit patiently, waited to have a chance to try the extremely rare world class beer, Pliny the Younger. This triple IPA from the Russian River Brewery in Santa Rosa has been rated the "Best Beer in the World" and has currently been making it's rounds throughout Sacramento during some of the many awesome events of Sac Beer Week. After a few hours of waiting outside Streets of London and quite a bit of luck, I was able taste this juice from the heavens. The beer had a very sweet hops aroma with a perfect balance of fruits along with a hint of pine and malty sweetness. The beer was incredibly smooth, especially when you consider it has a 10.3 alcohol content. Quite simply it was the best beer I have ever had.

This week has allowed hardcore beer enthusiasts to try some of their favorite rare beer, while also providing a learning experience to those not acquainted with the beer culture that has been growing immensely over the past few years. And that in itself is the true beauty of Sacramento Beer Week. There is something for everybody. While, Pliny the Younger is certainly going to be my highlight, there are so many other awesome events going on this week. If you are a beer connoisseur, I am sure you are already enamored with the beer selection and events this week. If you are not (yet) an avid beer drinker, I promise you will never look at a Coors or Bud the same way again after this week. Don’t Call it a Redesign: A First Look at the New Myspace

Disclaimer: Please hold all judgement and laughter till the end of the blog post. With the disclaimer out of the way let me say this, Myspace is quiet possibly the coolest and most intriguing website I have been on in a long while.

The word Myspace invokes memories of high school, animated gifs, profile counts, and horrendous "layouts". With the growth of Facebook, Myspace seems like a distant memory. The New Myspace however bears no resemblance to its outdated predecessor. It is poised to take on the current social world dominated by the social giants Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest as well as the music scene comprised of Pandora and Spotify. It seamlessly merges the social and music world together to create a unparalleled experience.

Its blend of Windows 8 and Spotify with a dash of Twitter and Facebook makes for a very smooth and enjoyable user experience. The typography and overall design of the site is absolutely gorgeous and while the side scrolling may not resonate with everyone, I find it very fresh and natural. While taking on these giants is certainly a daunting task, especially for a company who has to shake such a terrible stigma, I believe Myspace can once again become entrenched in our daily lives. Music is certainly the clear focus and basis for the New Myspace and while it offers a fantastic experience for fans (think spotify but more social and no pesky ads), it offers so much more for bands and artists. The main benefit for being an band or artist on the New Myspace is the integrated and in-depth analytics. The analytics offer a band or artist the ability to gain insight on who their music resonates with as well as their other likes and dislikes. This feature should allow new and upcoming bands and artists the capacity to target specific areas to grow their fan base.

The overall music selection is also quite surprising. I have built up a pretty extensive library through Spotify over the past few months, and was able to find almost all the songs I was looking for on the New Myspace. I have enjoyed using the "Discover" feature and found plenty of new artists and songs over the past few weeks. Finally, from a fan's perspective it is pretty cool being able to connect and interact with bands and artists. The New Myspace offers an intimate relationship between fan and artist which greatly differs from that of Facebook or even Twitter. Overall, I have been thoroughly impressed with the New Myspace and while there are certainly things I hope they fix in the near future, I have found myself spending much more time on the New Myspace than Spotify. Currently it lacks a mobile app, however they are working on developing one. I can only imagine the mobile app will be as fluid and beautiful as the site. Once this is developed my complete break away from Spotify will be complete. The New Myspace is finally open to the public, so if you have not already then go sign-up. I promise you will be no where near disappointed.
